How To Cook Up A Book - Sunday 18th May

A creative bookart workshop with The Travelling Bookbinder, Rachel Hazell

I’m thrilled to be collaborating with Rachel Hazell for this very special bookart workshop. As teacher, author and traveller, books, words and the power of imagination have always been central to Rachel’s life. The day she was taught how to make her first book, she knew she’d be a bookbinder for the rest of her life.

“I believe that everyone has a book inside of them and I love sharing the satisfying experience of creating unique artwork, in the most inspiring places” says Rachel.

This a workshop for all. No experience is necessary, just openness to trying something different.

Rachel read English Literature at Edinburgh University, trained in Bookbinding at the London College of Printing and completed Masters degrees in Book Art at Camberwell College of Art, and Printmaking at Edinburgh College of Art. She lives between Edinburgh and the small Hebridean island of Iona.

Our plan for the day together:

Arrive at 10am for tea, coffee, seasonal baking then an introduction from Rachel and Jess.

Rachel will then guide you through:

A hands-on introduction to bookart. Demonstrating a set of simple and ingenious folded book structures that you’ll make for yourself.

Liberating mark-making, writing and free drawing exercises capturing an impression of the day; Jess’s kitchen implements, the table setting, ingredients, scents and the process of preparing our food.

The session will be punctuated with a big 3-course sharing lunch and drinks by Jess, followed by final tweaks or additions to the pages and an informal show and tell.

You’ll leave with a book recording not only the food that Jess has cooked, but maybe also tasting notes, culinary tips, conversations, quotes and supply recommendations.

There will be plenty of opportunity to ask questions, shop the Elliott’s range of kitchenware and buy copies of Rachel’s book Bound: 15 Beautiful Bookbinding Projects.

You’ll leave around 4pm with your own uniquely personal artwork, a goody bag with the lunch recipe, ephemera and postcards, and loads of ideas for creating more books of your own.

Just let me know of any dietary requirements when booking, can’t wait! Jess x
